Many people dream of eventually becoming self-employed – some people
have what it takes to be self-employed, and others unfortunately do
not. When deciding if entrepreneurship is the right option, it is a
good idea to turn to some of the most common qualities of successful
entrepreneurs to see if the odds are in your favor.
Some common qualities of the successfully self-employed:
Hardworking – Entrepreneurs cannot afford to be
lazy. We need to take the initiative, and willing to put in more hours,
not less, than we would if we were working for someone else.
Confident – The chances of entrepreneurial success are slim if the we constantly doubt our ability to succeed or if we lack confidence.
Creative – A huge part of being an entrepreneur is
to keep a constant flow of ideas coming in, but more importantly there
needs to be some creativity to help set our business, products, and/or
services apart from our competition. Entrepreneurs breaking new ground
with creativity tend to be the most successful in the end.
Independent – If someone constantly needs someone
else to tell them what to do before they can act, they will unlikely
succeed as an entrepreneur. We tend to be independent thinkers who come
up with our own ideas and plans, and act on them.
Leadership Ability / Delegation – Many businesses
cannot operate by just one person, at least if the business itself is
going to demonstrate strong growth potential. A key to growing a
business is knowing how to lead others, and knowing how to delegate
responsibilities rather than taking on every menial task alone. This
does not imply strictly hiring employees; rather, we can involve working
with independent professionals when the workload is heavy.
Risk-Takers – To be a successful entrepreneur, we
have to be willing to take enough of a risk to leave the comfort of a
traditional 9-5 job in favor of a less certain income source. However,
being a risk-taker does not mean successful entrepreneurs are willing to
gamble with their success. Instead, our risks should be carefully
calculated and planned.
The possession of self discipline enables us to choose, and then
persevere with actions, thoughts and behavior, which lead to improvement
and success. It also gives us the power and inner strength to overcome
addictions, procrastination and laziness and to follow through whatever
you do. Granted, the self-employed business owner may have some
self-confidence issues to deal with, but each of us has them
nevertheless. Our businesses are new and at times, we can feel we are
not up to the challenge. Despite this, however, we forge ahead, develop
new routines, and learn to become more self-disciplined. With time and
hard work, we can have the success we are dreaming about accomplishing.
